Salisbury, NC – Dr.
Fisher personally visited the 77th District fire stations and
thanked as well as listened to the concerns of our firefighters as well
as those visiting from Charlotte, Enochville, Liberty, Concord, High
Point and other areas. Recalling her time in fire fighter training and
experiences trying their jobs on for size, Fisher was able to bring a
warm smile to many faces and share in their pain and sorrow.
The visits
pointed out the courage of brave young men and their families who are
prepared to sacrifice their lives as a measure of their devotion and
service to this county. The Innes Street Station was home base for both
of the firefighters who died, Justin Monroe and Victor Isler, who died.
In addition, the Longs Ferry Road station was where the youngest
firefighter started his career at age fourteen and almost a half dozen
young North Rowan students who are following in his path were
volunteering. North Rowan High School has the only junior firefighter
program in the county and many of the present participants have been
involved with that program.
In East
Spencer, the accommodations for their squad are lacking and Dr. Fisher
pledged to take this on with the help of this community as a personal
project. Talks with volunteer fighters in Cleveland and Franklin
revealed that they have to pay for their own clothes, food, and personal
car lights so they can clear a path on their way to serve us. At fire
station #2 Fisher shared in firehouse chow—a cheeseburger cooked on
site. “Given all that these personnel give to the community, we must
make sure they have what is needed to be comfortable in offering us
their service,” noted Fisher. |
