Salisbury,
NC – On May 1, 2008 the Good Shepherd Clinic opened in new quarters in
the basement of the First Ministry Center of the First Baptist Church on
Fulton Street. This clinic has been in existence for more than fourteen
years relying on the charitable work and donations from volunteer health
providers. The facility has enrolled almost 500 clients reflecting the
working poor and many who would otherwise go without care.
Dr. Fisher toured the Good
Shepherd Clinic and was pleasantly surprised to find the facility able
to provide diabetes screenings with hemoglobin A1Cs as well as a good
variety of blood pressure medicines to treat their two largest clinical
findings. When queried about what the pressing need they were not able
to meet was, Fisher was told that the demand for adult dental services
outstrips their ability especially given that the health department
reportedly does not do adult dental care.
Earlier in the evening, Dr.
Fisher also stopped in on the new home of the Community Care Clinic
located on Mocksville Avenue. Previously Fisher has sent many to this
clinic and donated any things which might be used for patient care given
her by drug companies. “It is unfortunate that both clinics are only
able to open on Thursday evenings. As I listen to the plight of the
uninsured in this state and nation, I don’t think people truly
appreciate that there is not enough money in the system to provide all
the care that people may want. We do have the ability to meet basic
health needs and should seriously reexamine how we utilize the public
health department. This is important given that several counties are
without doctors, but every county in this state has a public health
department.” This philosophy is part of Dr. Fisher’s New Prescription
for North Carolina as the Republican Candidate for the NC House District
77 seat.
